Scottish Songs

P2/3 have been doing a topic called 'When Gran Was A Girl'. They asked us if we would like to help them with some old Scottish Songs. We got together and sang through some old favourites and we all had a great time. We also asked the children to make upi their own verses which were great too! Here is a snippet of the singing time we had together!

Manners!

In Primary 4 language today we were looking at comprehension. The passage was all about manners. We were talking about what things were good manners or bad manners in our country and then looking at some customs from abroad.
In the picture below Steven and Benjamin are shaking hands which is a common greeting in our country. This dates from the middle ages when knights would offer an empty right hand to each other as a way of showing they held no weapon and were therefore friends.

Space Display!

Today we began working on our 'Space' display. We drew a huge spaceman and the children painted him to go on the wall on a moon landing scene. Great work!

Emily: It takes 12 years to go once around the sun.

Cameron: Jupiter is the biggest planet in our solar system!

Sophie / Isabelle : Jupiter is 11 times bigger than Earth.

Alex:Different gases make belts of colour in Jupiter's atmosphere

Isabella: The Great Red Spot is a huge storm of swirling gases.

Rosa Parks and the Civil Rights Movement

Today P4/5 were working with Mr Atkinson this afternoon for our 60s project. We were looking at the story of Rosa Parks who became the focal point of great civil rights protests in the United States in the 60s. It was a great lesson and at the end we acted the story out. Here us some photos to illustrate:

Imaginative Writing

Today we were having a crack at some imaginative writing. Primary 5 were writing about a time they were scared and in Primary 4 we were trying to get the hang of writing settings for our stories.
After we had written them we all read out our imaginative pieces and then voted on our favourites. The top three were Alex, Sophie and Isabelle. Here are their stories:

Alex has written about how he was scared by his sister Kathryn's reaction to a giant spider in the hall!

Sophie wrote the setting for a story called 'The Cottage'.

Isabelle wrote a story about an incredibly messy house!

Well done to our winners and to all the children who worked hard on some excellent pieces!

Trampolining Week 4!

Great progress by all the children in P4/5 in our trampolining block. We are working towards our certificates at the end of the block and making really excellent progress. Our instructor, Louise, was really delighted with us today as we were working on our 'swivel-hips'.
I have included a few short video examples but could have easily put up a video of all the children.
Well done!

Venus!

Today, after we have worked hard on grammar and maths work, we are looking at Venus! Unfortunately not literally because we are at school in daylight but at night Venus is the brightest object in our night sky after the moon. It is named after the Roman goddess of love and is sometimes called Earth's 'sister planet' because they are similar in size.
We look forward to all the interesting facts we will discover!

Trampolining

This week on Tuesday we went for the third lesson in our series of trampolining lessons. We have currently learned the basic move - 'tuck', 'pike', 'straddle', and moved onto practicing 'seat-drops'. The children are all making great progress and we are seeing some really good performances. Trampolining is a great way of keeping fit as it excerises so many of the main muscle groups.

Telescope

As part of our 'Space' topic Courtney brought in her dads telescope. We looked through it but our classroom is not ideal for seeing stars! It was really interesting to see a telescope though because so much of what is known about what tghe universe looks like is thanks to huge telescopes like the Hubble space telescope which hjas brought us some fantastic pitures like the one below.

Paper Mache

Yesterday P4/5 began the construction of the Solar System! A big job you may think, which is why we only managed 4 planets and will have to do the others next week!
We used paper mache and balloons to make Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars today. We looked at the relative sizes of the planets and tried to make the bigger ones bigger and the smaller ones... smaller!
We are going to hang these from the classroom ceiling to make our very own solar system!
Great fun was had by all!

Winning Group!

The winning team in P4/5 for this week is 'Marvin the Martian'! Congratulations on your hard work. Remember on Monday to bring money for lunch at our coffee shop in Jamaica Street!

Hard Work!

In P4/5 we work hard in many ways, we learn through discussion, co-operation, practical tasks and investigation. We also work very hard to be excellent in our reading, writing, spelling, numeracy and mental maths. Here you can see Alex working hard on his comprehension. It's great to see that the children in our class have made an excellent start to this school year and are working very hard.
Well done!

Well done Cayman!

The Moon Landing by P4/5

This afternoon Primary 4/5 were movie making! We had been talking about the moon and how it affects the tides on earth and all sorts of other fabulous facts. We then moved on to wonder at how mankind managed to actually stand on the moon that we see in our night sky way back in 1969. The children then made our own movie of the moon landing using simple stop-frame animation. We hope you enjoy!
