Story Writing

'I can use what I learn to create my own stories... with interesting structures, characters and settings.'

Today we were writing stories and looking specifically at setting and plot. We talked about the ancient Greeks and how they loved stories of grand quests.
We imagined our own 'worlds' and drew maps of them. This picture shows Toby's. We included lots of locations where exciting things could happen.
After drawing our maps we wrote stories of quests with something lost or stolen has to be recovered.
It was great fun and the stories are coming on well! We may get some videoed and on the blo for you.

Lets...Play...Darts!

I can use addition, subtraction and multiplication when solving problems, making best use of the mental strategies... I have developed. (MNU 1-03a)

Just in case any parents in P4/5 were wondering when their children reported that we'd been playing darts on Friday afternoon... we were!
We have been looking at doubling and trebling in maths and what better way to practice these skills than with a grand game of darts. Of course we weren't using the sharp pointy dangerous ones but nice safe magnetic versions. We started two teams with the standard 501 and worked our way down, doubling and trebling as we went! It was great fun and will hopefully become a finishing activity for hard working maths students in the weeks ahead.
There were however no 'pints' consumed during the game so fear not!!

Pupil of the Week!

I make full use of and value the opportunities I am given to improve and manage my learning.

This week P4/5 are delighted to have Benjamin as our Pupil of the Week. This term we have set Benjamin specific individual targets, many of which he has set for himself. He has been working very hard to achieve these targets and has done particularly well this week.
Well done Ben!

Bee Bots!

On Friday in computing P4/5 were working with our small programmable friends.. the 'Bee Bots!'
These little marvels are able to be programmed to follow a set course and are a great way of looking at control commands and co-ordinates.
They are also great fun!

I am developing problem solving strategies, navigation and co-ordination skills, as I play and learn with... programmable toys.

I can work collaboratively to design an interesting game which incorperates a form of control technology.

New Groups!

Today we re-named our class groups. The old group names were connected to our space topic earlier in the year and the new ones are connected to our Greek topic which we are just beginning.
We have decided to go for the names of monsters in Greek myths so the new names are as follows.

Yoda has now become... 'HYDRA!'

Dan Dare has now become... 'CYCLOPS!'

Marvin has now become... 'MINOTAUR!'

The Jestons have become...'GORGONS!'

I have to point out that the groups were not named based on the physical appearance of any of the children!

We are looking forward to looking at some of the stories associated with our new names as we work through our look at Greece, old and new!

Endangered Species

Today we are at Kelvingrove Art Gallery in Glasgow. We are attending a workshop on endangered species. We have been talking about the food chain and how important each animal is in the balance of life on earth. It was amazing to hear reasons why even our humble midgie has an important place in the ecology of planet earth!

Pupil of the Week!

Congratulations to our first Pupil of the Week for 2010.... Toby! Toby is always a hard worker and has started 2010 so well. He is tackling new concepts in maths very well and has also produced excellent language work. Well done Toby!

Division

This week primary 5 are looking at division in maths. We have been working through
problems using whole numbers in addition and subtraction and now we move onto division. It's been a while since some of the children have looked at division but bear with us... we'll master it!
Consequently some of the homework this week centres around division.
There will be links posted here to various maths games you can play online to help with dividing. Have fun!

The Burrell Collection

Today we were at the Burrell Collection in Pollock Park, Glasgow. We were there to do a workshop looking at the art of Edgar Degas, who was an impressionist painter.
We looked at the pictures that the collection has and then used pastels to make our own versions of Degas pictures. It was great fun.

Tables!

I can use ... multiplication when solving problems, making best use of the mental strategies and written skills I have developed. (MNU 1-03a)

This term for homework we are looking at tables and number bonds. The children have a copy of the 2-9 times tables in their homework pouch. Please learn these if possible every night Monday-Thursday. We will focus on one table per week. To consolidate please let your children play some of these tables games each night to help retention of facts. I will post different online tables games each week.
We have also looked out some great tables games in class to support these.

Try these games this week for starters:

Welcome Back!

Welcome back to a new term and a new year!

Many many thanks for all the kind gifts at Christmas from parents in P4/5. They were all very much appreciated!

We are now looking at a very hard working term which I'm sure the children will enjoy greatly. We will be studying Greek society and looking at ways in which it has affected our own day, there are a variety of exciting trips and visits which I will post on the blog, and we are going for ice-skating lessons at the Waterfront as part of the P.E programme.
I'm sure we will all enjoy a successful and enjoyable term.

There are one or two small changes in the uniform requirements in P4/5 this term and I have posted a form below to let you know. I will also send a paper copy home.

Happy New Year!

Mr J :)
