This afternoon P4/5 went outside after a hard mornings work. It was a beautiful day and we had such fun in the light covering of snow left in the playground :)

It's All Greek to Us!

Today we are at the Burrell Collection at Pollock Park in Glasgow. We've been looking at the Ancient Greeks and today's workshop is all about the life and art of ancient Greece. To start off with we all got into the Greek groove by donning our costumes: Boys put on the 'chiton' and girls the 'peplos'.
We then talked about the ancient Greek Olympics and looked at 'Hoplites' or Greek Warriors. Apologies for the violent nature of the video!

Bird Sanctuary Trip

Today we are visiting the RSPB reserve at Lochwinnoch. We are looking at ecosystems and concentrating on two habitats: water and woodland.
RSPB stands for Royal Society for the Protection of Birds. Today we were shown round by Karen and Jamie. It was great fun!

'All Is Number'

This afternoon in P4/5 we were doing some maths not normally done until secondary - pythagoras!
Mr Creighton came from the secondary maths department to teach us about the ancient Greek mathematician Pythagoras. We learned about who Pythagoras was and looked at various ways of using numbers like Pythagoras. We looked at right angled triangles. The Pythagoreans had a motto: 'All is Number'.

Gallery Of Modern Art 2D-3D

This morning P4/5 are at an art workshop called 2D-3D at the Gallery of Modern Art in Glasgow. This is a great workshop for us as we've been looking at 2D and 3D shape in maths so it's a great opportunity to see how artists work in both 2D and 3D and also to create some artworks ourselves. We were met by Anna who was great! She showed us into the gallery where we looked at the paintings of Briget Riley and discussed in pairs whether they were 2D or 3D and how she managed to create movement in her art. Then we made our own 3D art using cut paper and put these on display on the gallery floor.
Finally we went to the workshop at the top of the gallery where we made masks and commented on each other's work.
All in all it was an exceedingly enjoyable day!

I have the opportunity to choose and explore an extended range of media and technologies to create images and objects, comparing and combining them for specific tasks.

I can respond to the work of artists and designers by discussing my thoughts and feelings. I can give and accept constructive comment on my own and others' work.

Maths for Mums and Dads!

Parents may be interested in a current offer on a useful book. It's called 'Maths for Mums and Dads' and is currently on a special price at Amazon.
I expect most of the maths work that P4/5 have to do at home is not a problem for any parents! However, this book has some great ideas on how to break down difficult concepts in primary maths and explain them to the kids! It also makes quite an interesting read!

Mr J :)

Pupil of the Week!

Today we congratulate Isabella for being Pupil of the Week for Primary 4/5. She has done so well over the past few weeks in all her work and particularly in some rather difficult maths work.
Well done Isabella!
